A Guide for Students — 2026
The UK remains one of the most popular study destinations for Nepali students — and for good reason. Its universities carry global weight, degrees are typically shorter than in many other countries, and the post-study work route gives graduates two years to build their careers in one of the world’s most dynamic economies. This guide gives you the complete, honest picture for 2026.
Why Nepali Students Choose the UK
- Degrees are typically 3 years for undergraduate and 1 year for postgraduate — shorter and often more cost-efficient than comparable programs elsewhere
- Russell Group universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, and Edinburgh — are among the most respected in the world
- English-medium instruction throughout — no language barrier once you meet the proficiency requirement
- Nepali student community is well established in cities like London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds
- 28-day transit to Nepal for short breaks is straightforward — geographically closer than North America
Visa — The UK Student Route
To study in the UK, Nepali students need a Student Route Visa (formerly Tier 4). This is issued by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and requires you to have an offer from a UKVI-licensed institution.
Key Requirements
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) — a unique reference number issued by your UK university after you accept your offer
- Proof of English language proficiency — IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Cambridge English
- Financial proof — funds must be held in your account for 28 consecutive days before applying
- Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate — mandatory for all Nepali applicants; taken at a UKVI-approved clinic in Nepal
- Valid passport — recommended to have at least 2 years of validity beyond your course end date
Visa Fees (2026)
| Fee Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Student Route Visa application fee | £524 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) | £776 per year of your course — paid upfront for the full duration |
| VFS Global service fee (Nepal) | Check current VFS Nepal rates at time of application |
What is the IHS?
The Immigration Health Surcharge gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) during your stay — including GP visits, hospital treatment, and emergency care. Despite the upfront cost, it provides substantial value given the cost of private healthcare in the UK.
Financial Requirements — The 28-Day Rule
This is where many Nepali applications go wrong. The UK requires you to show that you have held sufficient funds in your bank account for a continuous period of 28 days before your visa application date.
| Studying In | Living Costs | Required Total for 9 months |
|---|---|---|
| London | £1,529 per month | £13,761 |
| Outside London | £1,171 per month | £10,539 |
These living costs must be shown in addition to your full first-year tuition fee. Your tuition amount is stated on your CAS. Both amounts must be visible in your bank account simultaneously for the full 28 consecutive days.
Important: What the 28-Day Rule Means Practically
- You must not withdraw funds or drop below the required amount at any point during the 28-day window.
- Funds can be in your account or a parent’s / guardian’s account — if a parent’s account, you must provide proof of relationship and a financial declaration.
- Sudden large deposits shortly before the 28-day window begins are flagged by UKVI as a concern — demonstrate stable, traceable savings.
Tuition Fees — What to Budget
| Program Level | Typical Annual Tuition (Average Range) |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate — arts, humanities, social sciences | £11,400 to £18,000 per year |
| Undergraduate — STEM, engineering, sciences | £17,000 to £26,000 per year |
| Postgraduate — taught Master’s (most subjects) | £15,000 to £25,000 per year |
| Postgraduate — MBA programs | £20,000 to £45,000 per year |
| Medicine / Dentistry / Veterinary | £30,000 to £60,000+ per year |
Tuition fees vary widely. London universities are typically at the higher end of the range. Universities in cities like Coventry, Bradford, Hertfordshire, and Sunderland offer strong programs at more affordable fees.
English Language Requirements
| Program Level | Typical IELTS Requirement | PTE Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate (Bachelor’s) | IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall | 50 to 58 |
| Postgraduate (Master’s) | IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 overall | 58 to 65 |
| PhD / Research degrees | IELTS 6.5 to 7.5 overall | 58 to 73 |
Always check your specific university’s requirements. UKVI requires IELTS for UKVI — confirm with your test centre.

| Weak or vague Statement of Purpose | Write specific SOP connecting background, program choice, and future plans |
| CAS not received before applying | Ensure CAS issued by your university before submitting visa application |
