IELTS vs PTE

Both IELTS and PTE are internationally recognised English proficiency tests. Both measure the same four skills — Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. But they are structured very differently, score differently, and are accepted to different degrees depending on where you plan to study. This guide helps you make the right choice.

Which Is Accepted Where — Your 6 Destinations

Destination IELTS PTE Recommendation
United Kingdom Universally accepted — required for Student Route visa Accepted by 99%+ of UK universities and for Student visa Both work — your choice
Canada Universally accepted — also for PR (Express Entry) Accepted for study permits and economic visa categories; not for PR via Express Entry IELTS safer for long-term PR plans
Australia Universally accepted — required for Student visa (subclass 500) Widely accepted for university admission and the Student visa Both work — IELTS slightly more universal across all institution types
Sweden Required by most Swedish universities Accepted by some but not all Swedish universities Take IELTS to be safe
Netherlands Widely accepted Widely accepted Both work — your choice
Finland Standard requirement at most Finnish universities Accepted at some but not universally Take IELTS to be safe
USA Widely accepted Accepted at 1,200+ universities Both work — check your institution

The Bottom Line on Acceptance

IELTS is the universal safe choice across all of the destinations — for both university admission and visa/immigration purposes.

PTE is an excellent alternative for UK, Canada (study only), Netherlands, and USA applications — and saves you time with faster results.

For Sweden and Finland specifically, take IELTS unless you have confirmed in writing that your chosen university accepts PTE.

Which Test Do Most Nepali Students Find Easier?

This varies by individual, but here are some honest patterns seen among Nepali test-takers:

If you are this kind of student… You may find this test easier
Comfortable speaking to a person, nervous about technology IELTS — the face-to-face speaking section feels more natural
Good typist, prefer computers, anxious about human judgement PTE — AI scoring removes the risk of a bad day with an examiner
Strong in grammar and vocabulary, slower in reading speed IELTS — reading passages are more traditional in format
Fast reader, good at multitasking PTE — the integrated format rewards speed and adaptability
Need results urgently for a visa deadline PTE — results in 48 hours vs up to 13 days for paper IELTS

Key Differences to Know Before You Decide

  1. Speaking — The Biggest Difference

IELTS Speaking is a live conversation with a human examiner lasting 11 to 14 minutes across three structured parts. Many students feel more natural in this format. PTE Speaking happens entirely through a microphone to an AI — you speak when a timer counts down and the recording stops automatically. This catches many students off-guard without practice.

  1. Integrated vs Modular Format

IELTS tests each skill separately in dedicated sections. PTE combines skills — for example, one task tests your listening and writing simultaneously. This integrated approach can work in your favour if you are strong across all skills, but it can drag your score down if one skill is weak.

  1. Score Reporting

IELTS gives you individual band scores for each section (e.g., 6.5 Reading, 7.0 Listening) plus an overall band. Many universities have minimum band requirements per section. PTE gives you a single overall score plus enabling skills subscores — most universities only require the overall score, which can be an advantage.

Our Honest Recommendation for Nepali Students

If you are applying to the UK or Netherlands:

Both IELTS and PTE are equally well accepted. Choose based on which format suits your learning style.

If you need results quickly — choose PTE.

If you prefer speaking to a person rather than a machine — choose IELTS.

If you are applying to Australia:

Both IELTS and PTE Academic are accepted for the Student visa (subclass 500) and by virtually all Australian universities.

PTE is actually very popular in Australia — Pearson has a strong presence there. Either test works well.

Check your specific institution’s minimum score requirements, as these vary.

If you are applying to Canada:

Both are accepted for your study permit. However, if your long-term goal is PR through Express Entry, take IELTS — it is accepted for all immigration pathways whereas PTE has limitations at the PR stage.

If you are applying to Sweden or Finland:

Take IELTS. Not all Swedish and Finnish universities accept PTE, and confirming acceptance for every program you apply to adds unnecessary risk. IELTS removes the uncertainty entirely.

If you are applying to the USA:

Both are accepted at most universities. Check your specific institution. IELTS remains the broader standard.
